While Travelling
- On long flights to avoid possible deep
vein thrombosis (DVP) take an aspirin
before boarding your flight. Aspirins
thin the blood therefore decreasing the
chance of blood clots forming.
- Take a walk up the aisle a couple of
times an hour to get the blood moving
in your legs. There are also exercises
you can do in your seat to prevent DVP.
- Avoid sleeping for long periods while
flying because when you are motionless
you are more likely to develop blood
clots.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine and drink
plenty of water.
- To relieve pressure on take off and
landing try sucking a sweet.
- Avoid wearing tight clothes, which
could restrict blood flow. It's a good
idea to take off your shoes while flying.
Before you go
- Do your research: see our recommended vaccinations, check
the exchange rates, check with customs
what you are allowed to bring back into
the country.
- Make sure you get the right travel
insurance.
- Too much baggage can prove to be a
real hassle while travelling so make
the most of the space in your cases.
- Pack all important documentation, valuables
and money in your carry on bags.
- Check with your hotel if they have
a laundry service; if so, you can pack
less clothes, and get them washed.
- Choose your clothes based around a
central colour so you can make more outfit
combinations with less clothes.
- Pack small items; socks and underwear
in your shoes; save space and help the
shoes keep their shape.
- Take small sized toiletries that will
just lat for the duration of your stay
instead of big bottles.
