Florence is a feast of delights. This
city has such a cultural and historical significance. It is also one of Italy's most charming cities, with a strong resemblance to a small medieval
centre and has contributed greatly to the political and cultural development
of Europe.

The city has a range of remarkable buildings, fabulous art galleries and treasure full churches. Florence bursts at the seams with life, with its elegant skyline, rust rooftops and fine domes. Florence is a great city to experience
on foot. You can discover the delights

At the very heart of the city lies the Fountain of Neptune, a stupendous marble sculpture at the terminus of a Roman aqueduct. The Arno River cuts through the ancient part of the city, with which the locals have a love hate relationship as it brings much trade to the city as well having destroyed the city by flooding it. Most of the bridges on the Arno were constructed by the Romans.

One of those bridges stands out as spectacular, The Ponte Vecchio, with is numerous shops built along the edges, held up by stilts. The best known palace in Florence is San Lorenzo, a monument to the Medici family, one of the most influential Florentine families of the 15 th century. Alongside, you can visit the internationally renowned Uffizi Gallery .

The Uffizi is to be found in a corner of Piazza della Signoria, a site made famous by there factors. Dante was sent to Exile here in 1301. The Bonfire of the Vanities took place here in 1497, followed by the execution of its instigator Girolamo Savonarola. Michelangelo's magnificent David was located here in 1504. It has since been replaced by a reproduction, with the original being moved indoors to the Academy Museum. Other world famous museums include the Bargello for great sculpture, including works of art created by Donatello, Michelangelo and Giambologna.

On the other side of the River Arno, you have the enourmous Pitti Palace, luxuriously decorated from the Medici family's former private collection. Next to the Palace you have the Boboli Gardens, which is elegantly landscaped and contains numerous interesting sculptures.

The Santa Croce church holds the huge tombs of Michelangelo, Gallileo, Dante and Machiavelli amongst others. The crowning architectural glory of Florence has to be its domed cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore.

When To Go

The great weather makes Florence an ideal holiday destination from April to June and from September to October. In those the prices are lower and you will not find as many tourists. Should you decide to visit in July or August,
