| Get the most out of your fuel |
With rising fuel prices, saving fuel is now more important than ever and there are quite a few things that you can do to be more economical. Here's a few things you should try which when couple together should see noticable increases to your mpg.
- Don't drive too aggressively; having a heavy right foot will lead to almost a third less mpg than with safer driving. High revs means the engine is using up much more fuel than when kept at low revs.
- Change up a gear soon; help keep the rpm down by changing up sooner rather than later.
- Keep the tyres inflated to the recommended psi found I the cars manual. Over/under inflated tyres can see fuel efficiency drop by up to 3%.
- If you see a noticeable drop in fuel economy check the spark plugs. If a spark plug is not working then fuel going to that cylinder won't be burnt and just wasted.
- Clean your air filter. A clogged air filter can see up to a 10% drop in fuel economy.
- When traveling at high speeds keep your windows closed, otherwise too much drag is produced, lowering efficiency.
- Also to minimize drag, if you use a roof box, take it off when not in use as the drag caused by this can see a sizeable drop in mpg.
- Excess weight in the car will lower the mpg; so if you are carrying around unnecessary weight, leave it at home!
- Plan your journey! Avoid heavy traffic as stopping and starting uses up the most fuel and also idling uses up fuel even though the car isn't moving.
- Try not to use your car for short trips, especially in cold weather as this will use up more petrol (per mile) than longer distance motorway driving.
- Try using premium fuels, they may cost slightly more but will give you slightly higher mpg
